Data Governance Transformation
Our government agencies are generating and storing more and more administrative data–including some of our most sensitive personal information such as addresses, social security numbers, incomes and tax records. At the same time, opportunities for using and linking those data to answer important questions and make decisions are expanding. To meet this moment, we need new approaches to data governance that guarantee data quality, accessibility, security, and interoperability. MDI’s Data Governance Transformation (DGT) project focuses on supporting local, state, and federal governments with developing robust data governance policies that are baked into the technology and monitored by responsive teams.

What is Data Governance?
Data governance can be understood as a system of checks and balances that ensures laws concerning how to collect, use and share data about us are faithfully executed. A hallmark of our approach is establishing a Data Governance Chain of Command which bridges two often-siloed teams: those who understand the technology (IT) and those who understand the data (Program). This strategy leads to more effective use and management of government data, removing barriers to access while establishing important privacy protections within a secure, robust architecture. We accomplish this by defining a set of standard Data Governance Roles and a generalized Data Governance Infrastructure along with an accompanying policy document which demonstrates how IT and Program coordinate within this new Data Governance Chain of Command.

Learn With Us
Through a series of presentations, toolkits and templates, we seek to guide chief data officers on how to get started with transforming data governance in their agency. Our tools and materials will outline the policies, technologies and people-power needed to make data governance possible, and how to right-size data governance programs for agencies of all sizes and missions.
